Ireland v Russia
By Bernard O'Neill

(JUNE 29) Russia beat Ireland A 4-1 in Clonmel last night to claim the two match senior international series 7-5 on aggregate. Sergey Demenew, Igor Ivanov, Rinet Valliuin and Ivan Doterov all chalked up wins in the Premier County two days after Ireland recorded a 4-3 verdict in Ballybunion Kerry.  Demenev beat Willie Casey on a countback despite a good final round by the Limerick featherweight, who won his bout in the Kingdom on Thursday night.

Mark Ginley, meanwhile, was stopped in round one by Ivanov - who stopped Kieran Keating in round one on Thursday night - while Anthony Upton retired injured versus Valliuin in round two.

Light heavyweight Denis Hickey retired injured in the third frame of his 81Kg clash with Ivan Doterov.

Clonmel ace  Kevin Fennessey was the only Irish boxer to have his hand raised in victory, earning a 20-15 win over Dimislam Snabano.

According to St Francis Limerick coach Ken Moore, Fennessey was a deserved winner.

He said: "He boxed well on the back foot used all the ring to build up a good lead in the first three rounds with effective counter punching.Kevin survived a last round push by the gutsy Russian to secure Irelands only win of the night."

St Francis star Mark McNamara, and Casey, of the Our Lady of Lourdes club in the Treaty City, both won in Ballybunion on Thursday evening but there were reversals for Graham Keating and Kieran Keogh.

Twenty year old McNamara created a bit of Shannonside boxing history on Thursday as he has now represented his country at four different levels, Youth, Junior, U/21 and Senior, a feat not achieved by any other boxer from Limerick.

Nicknamed, "Buster", McNamara, who picked up the best boxer award in Ballybunion, is the reigning Irish Intermediate champion.
