Global Boxing Union Working with the
Retired Boxers Foundation to Provide Opportunities for Retired
January 11, 2011 En Espanol
(JAN 11) The Global Boxing Union (GBU)
was founded in 1977. The GBU started out as a sanctioning body for
professional boxing title fights for male boxers. After an hiatus of 20
years the GBU was revamped in 1997 and started concentrating on
sanctioning both male and female title fights.
In December 2010, the Global Boxing Union began a revitalization plan
take the organization to the next level with a new board of directors
and new direction. The GBU will perpetually stand for quality! The
relationship with the Retired Boxers Foundation, Inc., was initiated
with Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos being selected as the GBU Global
Representative. "We support the Retired Boxers Foundation (RBF) by
donating a good percentage of every GBU sanctioned fight to the RBF"
said Marcel Niessen,the GBU Coordinator.
The intention of the revitalized Global Boxing Union is not only to
provide a quality championship title for the middle rated boxers around
the world, but also to acknowledge the past champions. GBU President,
Jurgen Lutz (Germany) has made a committment of a $250 donation to the
Retired Boxers Foundation. In addition, the GBU has set up an
international panel of boxing experts, i.e., retired
fighters, to supervise the GBU championship fights, and pays them a
small stipend along with travel and accommodations. According to Marcel
Niessen, "The retired fighters are all former champions and both the
fans and the promoters seem to enjoy the presence of these
once great warriors. They also have an obvious love of the sport and of
course, knowledge of the finer points of boxing."
The Retired Boxers Foundation is happy to be a part of the
regeneration of the Global Boxing Union and we salute them for the bold
steps they have taken to include the Retired Boxers Foundation, and
especially, the opportunities they provide retired fighters," said Alex
Ramos, Founder and President of the RBF. "If every sanctioning body felt
the same way, it would do so much to recognize the great warriors of the
past and they would benefit from their popularity with the fans."
The Retired Boxers Foundation was created by Alex "The Bronx Bomber"
Ramos, former 1984 USBA Middleweight and former 4 Time New York Golden
Gloves champion, in 1998. The Retired Boxers Foundation is an IRS
501(c)3 nonprofit corporation whose mission is to assist retired
professional boxers in the transition from their glorious days in the
ring, to a dignified retirement.
The newly configured Global Boxing Union Honorary Board is comprised of
legendary boxing trainer, Freddie Roach (USA) and one of the winningest
female boxers, Regina Halmich (Germany). The GBU President is Jurgen
Lutz (Germany); Vice President, Barbara Buttrick (USA); GBU Coordinator,
