April 18th, Paramount
Theatre, Huntington, New York: In the main event of Star Boxing's 18th
edition of its exciting Rockin Fights series Mastic/Shirley, Long Island
heavy handed "The Irish Bomber" Joe Smith Jr. claimed the IBA
Continental Americas Light Heavyweight Title scoring a punishing second
round stoppage of Newark, New Jersey's rugged veteran Cory "Black Ice"
the sound of the opening bell Smith and Cummings
charged to the center of the ring with both
fighters going for broke. Smith teeing off with
a big straight right and Cummings returning the
favor with a looping right of his own.
The taller longer Smith having tasting Cummings
power smartly positioned himself behind a stiff
measuring jab opening room for heavy rights and
left hooks beating his wide punching foe to the
punch, landing thudding blows rocking Cummings
Round two would quickly see some more fire works
with both Smith landing heavy shots backing
Cummings to the ropes several times for
punishing combinations forcing the very game and
durable New Jersey veteran to grab on.
Smith rocking Cummings with a heavy looping
right, jumped in like a shark smelling blood in
the water picking up the pressure and his work
load ripping Cummings up and down defrosting
"Black Ice" with a set of ripping body shots
opening him up for a dismantling uppercut
putting Cumming's in the corner and on ice with
follow up volley of devastating power punches
forcing the referee to wave it over at 2:10 of
round two. Smith improves to 18-1, 15Ko's while
the gate keeper Cummings drops to 18-9-1,
In the super lightweight co-feature Hicksville,
Long Island's Anthony "Showtime" Karperis scored
an eight round points win over Arlington,
Virginia veteran Bayan "The Mongolian Mongoose"
The mobile Karperis boxing his way to an early
lead was forced to dig in and battle his way
back after the crafty veteran Jargal turned the
tide in the middle rounds. The action closing
hot and heavy would see the well some solid two
way action with Karperis answering the
"Showtime" call in the closing rounds to grab a
tightly contested 76-7, 78-74, 79-73 majority
decision. Karperis improves to 10-2, 3Ko's while
Jargal drops to 17-7-3, 11Ko's.
In other action: Catskill, New York, based
Moldovan heavyweight Constantin Bejenaru pounded
out Neptune, New Jersey's turtleling Dave
Valykeo with a set of ripping body shots at 1:02
of round two. Bejenaru remains unbeaten at 9-0,
3Ko's while Valykeo dropping his last six sinks
In a entertaining four round super featherweight
clash of styles Huntington, New York "Hitman"
John Hernandez used his stalking pressure attack
to out work and out point Philadelphia's sharp
counter punching Derrick Bivins winning a solid
40-36, 39-37 times two unanimous decision.
Hernandez moves to 4-0, 1Ko while Bivins falls
In a back and forth four round lightweight bout
Westbury, Long Island's Dave Meloni closed hard
to pull out a hard fought 38-38, 39-37 times two
points win over Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada's
Michael Gargouri. Meloni moves to 3-1, 1Ko while
Gargouri remains in search of his first pro win
In the evenings opener New Jersey's Ian Green
used an accurate jab and straight right hand to
shutout Zephyrhills, Florida's Marlon Farr 40-36
times three in a super middleweight four
rounder. green improves to 4-0, 3Ko's while Farr
drops to 4-9.
Keeping with the Star Boxing Rockin Fights
tradition the fights were entertaining but there
is no doubt promoter Joe Deguardia and match
maker Ron Katz have found another "Paramount"
attraction to follow Chris Algieri and Cletus
"The Hebrew Hammer" Seldin in the all action
heavy handed "Irish Bomber" Joe Smith Jr.
